Download
The CSV download from Portfolio → Positions on Fidelity’s website.
Imports
Current stock shares and option contracts, quantities, sides and average cost basis.
Does not rebuild
Cash balances, completed trades, separate commissions and full historical performance. The entry date is the day you import, not the original trade date.
Compatibility
Use one account, English column headers, USD holdings, whole shares/contracts and a populated Average Cost Basis for each holding. Fractional stock quantities are not preserved. The checked report contains stocks and options; a stock-only file may not be recognized.

Not yet verified: Activity & Orders exports, other report layouts, combined accounts, non-USD holdings and other languages have not been verified for this guide.

You’ll need an active Premium trial or subscription to import. Use a .csv file of 10MB or less and keep the broker’s column headers.

1. Download from Fidelity

  1. Select your account.

Sign in to Fidelity’s website and open Portfolio. Select the account you want to track, then open Positions.

  2. Download the positions CSV.

Open the three-dot menu on the right of Positions and choose Download. Save the CSV without changing its column headers or file format.

Fidelity’s official help also describes a Download link at the top of Positions. Use the download control available in your view; both sources describe a positions CSV.

  3. Check which account is in the file.

Check the account columns and holdings in the downloaded CSV. Continue only if it contains the single account you intend to import. Selecting an account on the website is not a substitute for checking the file.

CSV column reference and official sources

These are column names in the downloaded file. Broker screen labels may differ. Keep the original headers; do not rename columns to force an import.

  • Account Number
  • Account Name
  • Symbol
  • Description
  • Quantity
  • Average Cost Basis

2. Select your portfolio and upload

  1. Open Portfolio. Use the portfolio selector at the top to select the portfolio for this broker account. Check its name.
  2. Check the file contains only this account, with USD holdings and whole quantities. Do not upload fractional holdings; their quantities are not preserved.
  3. On Positions, choose Import CSV.
  4. Choose Browse Files, select the CSV, then choose Upload & Parse.

Upload & Parse does not save positions. It opens a preview for you to review first.

Already reading this guide from the import window? Return to that tab to continue. Opening the instructions keeps your selected file, portfolio and progress in the original tab.

3. Review the preview before saving

Check the detected broker, stock and option counts, warnings and possible duplicates. Then compare the preview with your CSV.

Holdings
Compare every stock symbol and option contract, quantity and long/short side with the Positions report.
Costs
Entry prices and option premiums use Average Cost Basis, not Last Price. Stock entry prices are rounded to cents when saved. If a holding has no usable cost basis, do not assume it imported correctly.
Dates
Stock Entry Date should be the day you import. Options will also use that date when saved; check their entry dates after saving. This download does not supply the original trade date.
Currency
The import does not supply a stock currency. Check prices against your USD holdings and do not combine currencies using this guide.
Data left out
Cash balances, report notes, completed trades and separate commissions are not imported. Compare actual holdings rather than the number of lines in the file.

4. Confirm the import

When the preview matches the report, choose Confirm Import. The positions are saved to the selected portfolio, and the Portfolio refreshes after a successful import.

5. Check your saved positions

  • In Portfolio → Positions, check the saved stocks and options against the report: symbol or contract, quantity, side and entry cost.
  • Check the saved entry dates. They should use the day you imported, not the original trade date. Stock prices are rounded to cents.
  • Open Trade History (History on mobile) and look for options saved as closed. A stale report can produce an incorrect zero-price expiry; it does not prove the broker’s actual outcome.

Compare holdings and entry costs. This positions CSV alone will not make your cash balance or historical performance match a broker statement.

Accounts and later imports

Use one CSV per broker account and select its matching portfolio each time. Account numbers in a CSV do not send rows to different portfolios automatically.

A later snapshot does not synchronize your portfolio. Changed holdings may be added alongside older ones; holdings absent from the new file are not removed. Check existing holdings before every import, including data from manual entry or Broker Sync.

File, format or access problems
Wrong format or missing columns
Download the exact report in this guide. Keep the original headers and CSV format. A PDF, spreadsheet renamed to .csv or another broker report is not equivalent.
Empty result or “No rows to import”
Check that the file contains eligible stock or option holdings for the intended account. Headers, totals and cash notes are not positions.
“Please upload a CSV file” or “File size exceeds 10MB limit”
Choose the .csv file, extracting it first if it came in a ZIP. Ask support about a smaller export if it is over 10MB.
Access or session error
Check that you are signed in and your Premium trial or subscription is active. If import should be available, send support the exact message.
